FAIRPORT, N.Y. – A recreation of the historic voyage of the Seneca Chief, the first boat to travel the entire length of the Erie Canal 200 years ago, passed through Rochester on its way to New York City from Buffalo.

News10NBC rode along on the Seneca Chief joining the voyage from Pittsford to Fairport, where it drew crowds eager to witness this piece of New York history.

“It’s incredible to see people in their communities coming together to help commemorate the Erie Canal,” said Eddy Knibloe, a crew member. “We’re excited to be able to share all of our hard work and show that with teamwork and working together, the incredible things that you can accomplish, and we’re excited that people are excited to celebrate with us.”

The crew is living aboard the Seneca Chief for the month-long journey to Manhattan. The next stop for the boat is Newark, with an expected arrival on Tuesday.

The Seneca Chief is set to reach New York City on Oct. 25.
