ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Rochester Police Department is set to give an update on Monday after three officers were shot while responding to a report of a man breaking into his ex-girlfriend’s house.
RPD says the suspect shot the officers and the victim on Friday night on Chili Avenue near Thurston Road. An officer shot the suspect, who died at the scene. As of the last update, two officers and the victim remain hospitalized and one officer has been discharged.
RPD is expected to hold a news conference at 11 a.m. with the latest on the officers’ conditions and the investigation. News10NBC will livestream the conference.
So far, we know little about the man accused of opening fire on officers and the victim. During Saturday morning’s conference, RPD Chief David Smith said the investigation was still in its early stages. Mayor Malik Evans said the shooting puts a spotlight on domestic violence.
“We have to make sure that we have a serious conversation about what domestic violence is doing to this community. Because you saw, people exhibit a on what unchecked violence, domestic violence, in particular, what that can lead to. And as a result, we have three officers and a civilian that were seriously injured,” Evans said.
The Willow Domestic Violence Center says Rochester’s rate of domestic violence is higher than the state average. There are several resources available both locally and across the state for those who find themselves in a dangerous situation, even if it’s not as serious as this one.
The Willow Domestic Violence Center and New York State both have 24/7 hotlines. If you or someone you know are in immediate danger, call 911. There are also multiple shelters available for survivors.
