ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A Rochester Police officer is recovering in the hospital after police say a 33-year-old man, who they say is currently on parole for manslaughter in the first-degree, crashed into his car Wednesday night.
Police say at around 11:13 p.m. Wednesday, a marked Rochester Police car was on Mount Read Boulevard approaching Lexington Avenue when a driver, Ira Willis, didn’t stop at a red light and therefore hit the officer’s car.
As a result, the police car hit a utility pole, causing damages. Police say Willis then fled the scene.
The police officer in the car was brought to a local hospital, where police say he appears to be suffering from serious upper body injuries. They say Willis didn’t suffer any injuries due to the crash.
Police say they found Willis nearby and issued him multiple citations. He was charged with leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, unlicensed operator, and failure to obey a traffic law and was issued an appearance ticket.
Police also say the New York State Parole was contacted but did not respond to the crash.
