Police say on July 31, they got multiple calls reporting a suspicious man near Ernestine Street, who they say tried to break into some cars.

At around 7:36 p.m. they found the man, identified as 38-year-old Akintunde Campbell, in the area of Ernestine Street. Officers say they tried to stop Campbell. They also say he pulled out a handgun, and they asked him to drop it, but he didn’t.

As a result, the officers both fired at Campbell, who later died from his injuries. It’s unclear which officer’s shot hit Campbell.

In the body-worn camera footage from the first officer, you can see the officer going towards Campbell. The officer tries to grab and stop Campbell, but he resists.

Campbell then gets away from the officer. Both of the officers then can be seen pulling out their guns, approaching Campbell.

The sound then comes on, and the officers ask Campbell to put his hands behind his head. Shortly after, Campbell can be seen pulling something out of his pocket, not listening to officers commands. Officers asked repeatedly what he had, and to put it down.

That’s when the shots wrang out. In the footage, News10NBC heard 11 shots fired.

The first officer then calls for backup and for EMS. Him and the other officer go up to Campbell, put him in handcuffs, and check his gunshot wounds.
