RPD: Officer still hospitalized after crash on Rochester’s northwest side Wednesday

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A Rochester Police officer was released from the hospital after being involved in a crash while responding to a call on Wednesday, police said.

What happened?

RPD says the cruiser had its lights and sirens on when it crashed around 11:30 p.m. at the corner of Campbell and Ames streets. Both the officer and someone in the other car, a 47-year-old man, were taken to the hospital. The officer had non-life-threatening injuries, police told us.

RPD: Officer crashes into car while responding to call, traffic light knocked over

News10NBC’s photojournalist saw heavy damage to the front of the cruiser, with airbags deployed, and a traffic light pole knocked over. One light became detached from the pole. RPD says the intersection will remain closed until the Department of Transportation clears the area.

Neighbors heard the crash

The couple that lives nearby said they heard the sirens approaching before they heard the crash. They said it sounded like an earthquake.

Shirronda Hill has cameras facing the road, but they only notify and record when they detect a person. One of the cameras caught the response to the crash at 11:44 p.m., about 15 minutes after it happened.

Hill said she often hears and sees accidents happen here. It makes her feel afraid that a crash might send a car into her home.

“The pole was right on the police car. Right on it, like I’m thinking, I’m thinking the man was dead. I said, ‘Did they get everybody out?’ But you couldn’t really tell,” said Hill. “I’m in the window and my husband came down, but I didn’t come down, but anyways it was shocking because everything happens on this corner. I’ve seen about ten accidents since I been here.”

Hill and her husband moved in about a year and a half ago. They said this turn is also difficult for semis trying to get on to 490 west.

Temporary traffic light

There is a temporary traffic light here flashing red, and there are also stop signs posted so that people will treat this intersection as a four way stop for the time being.

Police say the circumstances around the crash remain under investigation. Check back for any updates.
