RPD officer reacts to the RPD officer being shot on Lake Ave on Friday

The News10NBC Team details breaking News, Traffic and Weather.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Rochester Police Department officer shot in the line of duty on Lake Avenue was released from the hospital Saturday. News10NBC’s Declan Stablow spoke with RPD Officer Anthony DiPonzio, who was shot in the line of duty 17 years ago. DiPonzio said whenever he hears a fellow officer was shot, it brings him back to when it happened to him.

But his mind also goes to how he can help. DiPonzio said he always reaches out to any officers who were involved to offer them guidance.

He said it’s important to focus on the positives like the fact you’re alive and not second guess your actions.

DiPonzio said it’s a long recovery process physically, mentally and emotionally. DiPonzio said he spoke with the officer shot Friday morning.

“He’s in good spirits, you know, it seems like he’s got his head straight and he’s looking at all the right things,” DiPonzio said. “I told them that he did a great job and he’s still there, so not much more you can ask for.”

DiPonzio said officers wounded in the line of duty share a lifelong bond. He and others will keep making sure the officer wounded Friday knows he’s not alone.

In December, three RPD officers were shot responding to a domestic violence call. DiPonzio said those officers have also been in contact with the officer who was shot Friday.
