RPD disperses crowd on Monroe Avenue, makes two arrests after shutting down part of road

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Rochester Police say they dispersed a crowd of 10 to 15 people around the Monroe Avenue bar district on Tuesday over what started as a vandalism investigation.

News10NBC’s photojournalist saw multiple RPD cruisers swarming the area, shutting down a large section at one point. RPD says it all started when officers saw a woman, 51, damaging a street sign around 12:50 a.m. According to RPD, as officers were trying to arrest the woman, another woman, 29, pushed an officer.

Police say they arrested both women, but then a group began to “aggressively encroach upon” the officers. RPD had to call for backup to disperse the crowd.

Both women were charged with criminal mischief and resisting arrest. The 51-year-old was also charged with obstructing governmental administration, and the 29-year-old was charged with harassment.

No officers were injured, but at least one ambulance did respond. News10NBC saw the scene clear eventually.
