ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Rochester Police are investigating after at least 15 people woke up Sunday to find their cars had been broken into at Erie Harbor Apartments on Mount Hope Avenue.
Several cars with smashed windows were still parked outside the apartment complex Monday.
Pamela Stephens said she noticed the damage around 6 a.m. Sunday. She had to break the bad news to one of her neighbors.
“I told her I hate to be the bearer of bad news. ‘If you ever parked right in front of the building, there’s a possibility that your windows have been knocked out.’ She said to me, ‘even handicapped’, I said ‘yes, I’m sorry, even the handicapped,” Stephens said.
Stephens said her car wasn’t damaged, but she does have concerns about safety after this. She said her bike was stolen just last week.
“I probably won’t go out much at night. I know we are on the Genesee River trail here and the bus stop is right in front of our building. So sometimes we get some drifters. Sometimes we get the homeless walking the trails. But I’ll probably stay indoors,” Stephens said.
A couple other people whose cars were damaged said coming out and seeing their windows broken really messed up their days.
“I had to go to work and I had to be at work at 9 a.m. I walked out of here, I like eight, eight, 10 a.m. and I’m like, wow. So I kind of was late to work was frustrating, but at the end of the day, it is what it is. I’m going to get my window fixed,” one victim said.
“I had things to do in the morning and I literally put off a priority for my grandkids because of this inconvenience. So yeah, it was a big loss and a big inconvenience for me,” another victim said.
A few people said they haven’t spoken with police in-person yet after reporting the break-ins. RPD said it forwarded the calls to the non-emergency line.
Security cameras are on site. News10NBC reached out to the property manager, Conifer Realty, as well as RPD to try to access that video.
A spokesperson from Conifer said they are cooperating with the investigation and referred us to RPD. No arrests have been made so far. Conifer Realty said it’s working closely with law enforcement on the investigation and understands the concerns residents have.
