ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Rochester community is continuing to celebrate 100 years since the start of Black History Month.
The Black Heritage Committee gathered at Rochester City Hall on Thursday night for a panel discussion about the past, present, and future of Black history celebrations in America. The event also included live music. Organizers said 2026 is a particularly important year for discussions of Black history.
“It’s very important, especially today with all that we have going on now trying to eliminate Black history, erase Black history,” said Hazel Washington, chairperson of the Rochester Black Heritage Committee. “We all have something to contribute, and we all want to be respected and honored for those contributions.”
The Black Heritage Committee has other upcoming events planned. Here’s the schedule:
- Tuesday, March 3: Women’s Recognition at City Council Chambers from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
- Saturday, April 11: City of Rochester Black Heritage Gala at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center. The doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the program begins at 6:30 p.m.
