Rochester band moves Venezuela earthquake benefit concert to The Exchange on Flint Street after Lux bar fire

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A local band had to scramble for a new venue after a fire at the Dive Bar Lux forced them to relocate their charity concert for Venezuela earthquake victims.

The band Rice and Beans was planning to host the benefit show at Lux for Venezuelan earthquake victims, but the bar caught fire Monday and temporarily shut down. News10NBC’s Tom Kowalski spoke with band member Gabriel Marcano about the last-minute change.

“Once this happened at Lux, I honestly initially thought it was just not going to happen. You know, I didn’t think I was going to be able to find a venue fast enough,” Marcano said.

The band found a new home for the concert at The Exchange on Flint Street. Marcano said he had deejayed there before for the Rochester Night Market.

For Marcano, the charity concert hits close to home. He was born and raised in Venezuela but has lived in Rochester for 12 years.

“It’s been very stressful, very sad,” Marcano said.

At least some of his immediate family is okay. However, Marcano has an uncle who lives in La Guaira, the area affected the most by the earthquakes. His uncle was missing for some days, and his building was completely flattened.

“The latest is that we do believe that he very likely passed away,” Marcano said.

The group is asking for donations like medicine, toiletries and baby food, but they’ll take monetary donations as well. The concert is set to take place Saturday starting at 5 p.m. at The Exchange on Flint Street.
