Police: Canandaigua woman suffers injuries after being attacked by own dog

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. — The Canandaigua Police Department say a 29-year-old woman was attacked by her own dog, which resulted in the dog being shot-and-killed by an officer.

Police say at around 5:11 p.m. Friday, officers responded to a report of a dog attacking a woman on Saltonstall Street.

When officers got there, they saw a pit bull actively attacking a woman in a lawn. As an officer ran towards the woman to help, police say the dog went after the officer, and the officer shot the dog multiple times, resulting in the dog dying at the scene.

The owner was brought to a local hospital, suffering severe injuries and disfigurement to her right arm and hand, along with bite injuries to her right leg, left shoulder, and her face.

Police say investigations show that the dog attacked the woman while she was walking in on a leash. They also say the dog attacked a bystander who tried to help the woman before police got there. The bystander suffered multiple minor injuries.

The Ontario County Humane Society was notified and responded to take custody of the dog.
