Perinton cuts ribbon on sensory room at community center

PERINTON, N.Y. — Perinton leaders cut the ribbon on a sensory room at the Perinton Community Center on Monday. It aims to be a space where all people can relax, reduce stress, and regulate their sensory needs.

The room includes specialized seating, LED tables, sensory lighting, fidgets, tactile activities, and interactive wall features to engage people’s senses. It also features a mural donated by local artist Jeanne Metcalfe and sensory bags for visitors to borrow and use throughout the community center.

Grant money from the American Rescue Plan Act fully funded the project. Town officials met with multiple community organizations and residents to help design the room.

What is a sensory room?

Sensory rooms have become more common recently as tools for stress relief and emotional well-being, according to the nonprofit Interaction Disability Services. It can also serve as a comforting space for people on the autism spectrum, people with ADHD, or others with sensory processing disorders.
