ROCHESTER, N.Y. — More than 30,000 Monroe County residents participated in early voting for the general election. News10NBC’s Declan Stablow reported that the final day of early voting was the busiest, with the Perinton Square Mall seeing over 800 voters.
Billy Nealon said early voting is mostly about convenience. “You know I could certainly do it on Tuesday November 4th, but you know we live right around the corner and we’ve done it a few times before it’s worked really well. And they put up the new booths and it’s really a lot easier, a lot quicker inside,” Nealon said.
Nealon emphasized the importance of being an informed voter.
“I think if you want to get the information, it’s all out there for you. But I think part of it is taking time to want to understand what the policies are that each of the candidates are promoting,” said Nealon.
He added that understanding both sides is beneficial.
“I might belong to one party, but it’s nice to understand both sides and I think if people take the time to understand what the other side is thinking, whether you agree with it or not, I think it makes for a better society,” Nealon said.
Nealon believes local elections have a significant impact.
“You know it really comes down to community, what’s happening in your community. I think it’s incredibly important to understand what the issues are in your particular community because that’s really how people need to vote for what’s happening around them,” said Nealon.
The Perinton Square Mall was the most popular polling site during the early voting period, attracting more than 4,700 voters. Across Monroe County, an average of 3,400 residents voted each day during early voting.
Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 4.
