Olympics on Monday: Finals for big air, speed skating, and more; Team USA’s hockey journey continues

 

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The first full week of the Milan and Cortina Winter Olympics has begun. There have already been so many memorable moments for Team USA, including gold medals in the figure skating team event and women’s downhill skiing with Breezy Johnson’s run.

News10NBC is your home for the Olympics. We’ve been tracking some of the biggest stories from the games and the journey of athletes from the Rochester area. Here’s what you can expect for Monday.

Schedule for Monday, Feb. 9

Eileen Gu, the San Fransico native snowboarder who competes for China, will try to add another gold medal to her collection in the women’s big air final. In addition, Florida’s Erin Jackson, champion of the 500m speed skating event in Beijing, will go for gold in the women’s 1,000m.

For Team USA women’s hockey, which features five Bishop Kearney graduates including Rochester native Haley Winn, they will try to dominate in their third straight game in the group stage. Figure skating also continues on Monday, where all eyes will be on three-time world champions Madison Chock and Evan Bates of the U.S. The pair is hearing into the competition after helping Team USA to secure a gold medal in the team event.

Here’s the schedule for which events will be televised on NBC and which you can stream on Peacock.

On NBC (Eastern Time):

  • Noon Women’s 1000m speed skating (MEDAL EVENT)
  • 12:45 p.m. Men’s team combined Alpine skiing, downhill and slalom (MEDAL EVENT)
  • 1:30 p.m. Women’s snowboard big air final (MEDAL EVENT)
  • 2:40 p.m. Rhythm dance figure skating: Part 2
  • 8 p.m-11 p.m. Primetime coverage of the day’s competitions, including alpine skiing, figure skating, and freestyle skiing
  • 11:35 p.m. NBC Olympic Late Night with snowboarding and speed skating 

On Peacock (Eastern Time):

  • 11 a.m. Women’s Singles Luge: Run 1 
  • 11:20 a.m. Warm-up for rhythm dance figure skating
  • 11:30 a.m. Women’s 1000m speed skating
  • Noon Men’s normal hill ski jumping
  • 12:05 p.m. Mixed doubles seminfinal in curling 
  • 12:30 p.m. Women’s singles luge: Run 2
  • 1:20 p.m. Rhythm dance figure skating
  • 1:30 p.m. Women’s snowboard big air final
  • 2:40 p.m. U.S. vs. Switzerland in women’s hockey

Local athletes to watch

Three Rochester-area athletes and others with local connections have been selected to represent Team USA for the 2026 Winter Olympics. Here’s what to know and when they compete.

Haley Winn: For women’s hockey, the roster includes five Bishop Kearney graduates, including Rochester native and defender Haley Winn. The other four graduates are Caroline Harvey (defender) of New Hampshire, Laila Edwards (forward) of Ohio, Kirsten Simms (forward) of Michigan, and Ava McNaughton (goalie) of Pennsylvania. Team USA has already won two of their games in the groups stages. Then, the quarterfinals will begin on Friday, Feb. 13. Here’s the rest of the schedule:

  • Monday, Feb. 9: USA vs. Switzerland
  • Tuesday, Feb. 10: USA vs. Canada

Chris Lillis: Chris Lillis, a Pittsford native who took home gold in the 2022 Beijing Olympics, will compete once again. Lillis won gold in the aerial freestyle skiing team event and placed sixth in individual men’s aerials. Unlike Beijing, this year, Lillis will get to compete in front of fans and interact with other athletes without worrying about the COVID-19 pandemic. News10NBC spoke with Lillis about how he got into aerial skiing and how he’s preparing to compete. We also spoke with Lillis’ parents about how their children got into aerial skiing. Here’s the schedule for men’s aerial freestyle skiing:

  • Tuesday, Feb. 17: Aerials qualifying round
  • Thursday, Feb. 19: Aerials finals

Dylan Walczyk: Dylan Walczyk, a former Bristol Mountain athlete, is also making an Olympic return. He will compete in men’s moguls and men’s dual moguls. The 32-year-old Rochester native competed in the Beijing Olympics, where he placed 16th in moguls. See News10NBC coverage of his competition in Beijing here.

Walczyk placed 12th in moguls and 16th in dual moguls during this year’s world championship. He’s finished as high as 8th place for moguls during world championships, according to his Team USA bio. Here’s the schedule for men’s moguls and men’s dual moguls

  • Tuesday, Feb. 10: Moguls qualifying round
  • Thursday, Feb. 12: Moguls final
  • Sunday, Feb. 15: Dual moguls qualifying round and finals

Other local connections to the Olympics

There are other Rochester connections to the Winter Olympics. Emily Renna, a Fairport native, has been chosen as an alternate athlete for women’s bobsled for Team USA. She finished fourth at the 2025 World Championships for the two-woman bobsleigh.

In addition, Erin Zach, a 2014 graduate of the Rochester Institute of Technology, will serve as a linesperson for women’s hockey during the Olympics. She played hockey for RIT.
