NYS DMV is ready to launch new streamlined technology systems in February

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles announced on Friday that it will introduce the first segment of its new, modernized technology system, designed to provide customers with a more modern and streamlined service starting next month. DMV offices will be temporarily closed during the installation.

The modernized system will allow employees to make transactions more effectively and efficiently on one platform, instead of moving between outdated systems that are more complicated. This will allow for a one-trip visit to a DMV office. Online transactions will also be more accessible.

The DMV will be closed during the renovation over Presidents’ Day weekend, starting on Friday, February 13, at 2 p.m. Businesses will reopen on the following Wednesday, February 18.

The temporary closure will make DMV online transactions, in-person, and phone services unavailable.

This comes after recent years of the DMV making changes to increase online and phone services to prepare in-person visits and reservations, reducing customer wait time.

“With one consolidated, state-of-the-art system, we will be replacing hundreds of software applications, some of which date back to the days of Nelson Rockefeller,” said DMV Commissioner and Chair of the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee Mark J.F. Schroeder.

The next phase of the renovations is expected for 2028.
