ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Congressman Joe Morelle announced Thursday that Monroe Community College is receiving $850,000 in federal funding to expand workforce training in the fields of optics and advanced manufacturing.
The funding will establish a Precision Optics Finishing Lab at Monroe Community College’s Advanced Technology Education Center.
“Rochester has spent generations building a world-class reputation in optics and photonics, and today’s investment helps ensure our community remains at the forefront of the industries shaping our future,” said Morelle. “This new Precision Optics Finishing Lab will give students, apprentices, and incumbent workers hands-on experience with the same advanced technologies used in precision optics and semiconductor manufacturing. I’m proud to have secured this funding because investing in our workforce means investing in Rochester’s continued economic leadership.”
“This latest investment gives MCC another tool to grow its globally recognized optics program, known for training the best technicians to fill in-demand roles that have bolstered the Rochester and Finger Lakes Region’s position as a leader in optics and laser technology,” said Dr. DeAnna R. Burt-Nanna, Monroe Community College president.
The project will provide hands-on training for students and workers using industry-standard equipment, supporting the region’s efforts to grow its optics and photonics economy.
