ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Money is flowing into the West Main Gateway in Rochester, with $10 million invested to boost economic success and vibrancy in the area.
One ROC, a development group, said the West Main Corridor is historically significant but has been long underinvested. The project spans from West Genesee Street to West Broad Street.
“We have seen an interest in the last couple of years of business owners, property owners, neighborhood residents really wanting to see more concentrated investment in the West Main and Susan B. Anthony neighborhoods,” said Lauryn DaCosta, grants program manager. “And we really feel like this is perfect timing with the Bullshead revitalization efforts going on simultaneously.”
This Bull’s Head Urban Renewal Plan started in 2009 and resulted in the City Council designating the area as eligible for urban renewal.
Business owners and developers can apply for grants up to $250,000 or have 90% of their costs covered, whichever is cheaper.
“I’ve noticed a lot of the projects along the West Main Corridor look really nice now,” said Mike Guche, a business owner. “And it would be nice to improve the front of the building and contribute to the neighborhood that way.”
DaCosta said they are looking for projects that will preserve historic buildings and restore their character.
“A lot of change that I want to see happen is actually bringing the building back up to power,” said Andy Winterkorn, a property owner. “Bring the historical features back to the building.”
Four million dollars is expected to go to public projects like murals and sidewalks, while $6 million will fund the grants.
“In this economy, to have funds available for business owners, property owners to restore the historic and beautification of West Main Street is incredibly fundamental,” said Denise Williams, a business owner.
This project is part of a $40 million investment across Rochester and a regional $300 million partnership investing in collaboration and growth across all of Western New York.
Applications for the project opened July 14 and will close in mid-September. Project leaders aim to move quickly, with awards announced in mid-October.
