ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Rochester area is set to honor military members who died while serving their country. Towns and the City of Rochester will hold Memorial Day parades and remembrance ceremonies on Monday. Here’s your guide to the parades:
East Rochester (canceled)
The Village of East Rochester has decided to cancel its parade planned for Saturday due to the rain that’s in the forecast. The parade was supposed to begin at 10:30 a.m. Organizers say they’re looking forward to next year’s parade.
City of Rochester (Monday)
Rochester’s parade gets underway at 10:30 a.m. on Monday at East Avenue and Alexander Street, then heads down Main Street before finishing at the corner of Main and Fitzhugh streets.
The parade route will be closed to traffic starting at 10 a.m. and will reopen after the parade is complete, around 1 p.m. Read more here.
Brighton (Monday)
Brighton is holding a ceremony at the Brighton Veteran Memorial at Buckland Park. It will run from 1 to 2 p.m. Town officials, military members, veterans, and Gold Star Families will be at the ceremony to honor fallen service members. Read more here.
Pittsford (Monday)
Pittsford is holding a parade starting at 10 a.m. and a ceremony after. The parade will start at Pittsford-Sutherland High School before heading along West Jefferson Road, turning onto South Main Street, and finishing at the Pittsford Cemetery. That’s where the ceremony will take place. Read more here.
Penfield (Monday)
Penfield is holding a remembrance ceremony at 10:30 a.m. at the Penfield Amphitheater in Veterans Memorial Park. That’s on Atlantic Avenue, behind the town hall. The ceremony will feature tributes to veterans, a guest speaker, essays by middle school students, and reflective music. Read more and learn how to participate here.
Chili (Monday)
The Chili American Legion is hosting a parade that will begin at 8:30 p.m. behind the Chili McDonald’s. It will end at the Veterans’ Memorial Park on Chili Avenue. There will be a remembrance ceremony after the parade. Read more here.
Holy Sepulchre Cemetery (Monday)
Holy Sepulchre Cemetery on Lake Avenue will hold its first-ever Memorial Day Mass in the chapel at the Christ Our Light Mausoleum. It begins at 9 a.m.
The Most Reverend John Bonnici, the bishop of Rochester, will lead the service. Earlier this week, volunteers planted 6,000 flags in the veterans section of Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
Kershaw Park Opening (Sunday)
mark your calendars! Kershaw Parks Beach in Canandaigua is officially open for swimming for the season starting Sunday, May 24. It’s open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 6:45 p.m. Those hours are subject to change, depending on the weather.
