Mechanicville Police: Family of 6 found dead in apartment near Albany

MECHANICVILLE, N.Y. — Six people, including four children, were found dead in an apartment near Albany Tuesday.

News10NBC’s affiliate WNYT in Albany reports Mechanicville Police did a family welfare check on Tuesday at the John Moore apartment complex in Mechanicville.

When officers got there, they say they found the bodies of six people inside one apartment. Police say the dead were two adults and four children, all part of the same family.

During a press conference Thursday morning, police identified the victims as the following:

  • Amy Steadman, 64, grandmother
  • Sarah Myers, 44, Amy’s daughter
  • Harper Harmon, 13, Sarah’s daughter
  • Hudson Harmon, 11, Sarah’s son
  • Gavin Harmon, 10, Sarah’s son
  • Gracelynn Harmon, 10, Sarah’s daughter

Police also said during the press conference that evidence was found in the apartment, indicating that an intentional poisoning happened and that one of the kids was stabbed.

Our affiliate reports sources told them there was resentment, particularly on the grandmother’s part, after the children’s father had recently been granted custody of them. WNYT also says police didn’t comment when questioned about this.

WNYT says police did confirm there was a handwritten note found that allegedly implicates the grandmother, Steadman, in the crime.

Police are continuing to investigate these deaths. For the latest on this case, go to our affiliate’s website by clicking here.
