FARMINGTON, N.Y. — A man was convicted earlier this week of assault on a police officer after prosecutors say he hurt a New York state trooper in 2024.
Miles Martin was also found guilty by a jury of criminal mischief, criminal contempt, DWI, common law DWI, and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.
Prosecutors say on Dec. 24, 2024, video footage showed Martin using heavy machinery to damage a vehicle. Footage also showed Martin driving a vehicle on public roadways and private property.
Witnesses told law enforcement that Martin had been drinking alcohol since about 2 a.m. that day, which led officers to do a DWI investigation.
During the investigation, officers tried to take photos for evidence when they say Martin became “agitated and uncooperative,” and refused to let them take photos.
Martin then kicked off his shoes towards officers and hit them. Prosecutors say officers then tried to put Martin in handcuffs, but he resisted. Multiple officers tried to gain control of Martin as he tried to resist, and eventually took Martin to the ground.
Prosecutors say after a brief struggle, Martin was handcuffed and put in a patrol vehicle. After taking Martin into custody, an officer said he had pain in his shoulder, and was brought to a local hospital for medical evaluation.
The Ontario County Sheriff’s Office and New York State Police were the agencies involved.
Martin is set to be sentenced in April. He faces a mandatory minimum sentence of three and a half years in prison. He could also get a sentence up to 15 years in state prison.
