Man accused leading deputies on chase in car stolen from Rochester airport

GREECE, N.Y. — A 21-year-old is facing charges after Monroe County sheriff’s deputies say he stole a rental car from the Rochester airport and led them on a chase that ended in a crash.

Deputies say they spotted a car driving over 100 miles per hour on I-490 westbound around 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Deputies tried to pull the car over on I-390 northbound but say it refused to stop.

The chase ended when the car crashed at the Route 104 exit in Greece. News10NBC’s photojournalist saw several street signs damaged.

Deputies say the suspect, Lavari Smith, tried to run away but was caught. He’s charged with possession of stolen property, reckless driving, resisting arrest, obstruction of a government agency, unlawful fleeing, and multiple traffic violations.

No one was injured. Smith was taken to court for arraignment. New York State Police and Greece Police helped with the chase.
