ROCHESTER, N.Y. – State lawmakers held a conference Wednesday afternoon to discuss the benefits of a proposed childcare capacity expansion bill.
State Sen. Samra Brook and Assembly Members Sarah Clark and Jenn Lunsford were joined by local advocates and childcare center operators. They highlighted the benefits of the legislation, which aims to create additional infant childcare slots.
The bill proposes lowering the age that an infant can be enrolled in home-based childcare centers from under 2 years to under 18 months.
“There’s a lot of studies that show these smaller centers are so essential to the development of young children, and here we are trying to figure out innovative ways to get more kids into these slots,” Clark said. “I’m really excited about this bill, I’m hopeful that we’ll see it on the governor’s desk soon.”
The bill passed both the Senate and Assembly earlier this year. It is now headed to Gov. Kathy Hochul to be signed into law.
