ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The family of Ja’yeir Smith, a 17-year-old Gates-Chili High School football player, is still searching for justice after he was hit by a white SUV on Sept. 7. The incident occurred at the intersection of Portland Avenue and Central Park, and no arrests have been made yet.

News10NBC’s Declan Stablow spoke with Smith’s family, who obtained security footage from a nearby auto shop showing the hit-and-run. In the video, Smith is seen crossing the street on a scooter when the SUV turns left onto Central Park, hitting him. Smith rolls onto and off the car’s hood, but the vehicle drives off without stopping.

“It really disgusted me, very upset and angry,” said Ja’yeir’s stepfather, Nehemiah Daniel. “It’s just sad to see that somebody can hit a child and just drive away, and just keep it moving.”

Smith’s parents remain in contact with the Rochester Police Department. Daniel expressed hope that the driver will be found, emphasizing the importance of the police work involved.

“It’d show you know that RPD put work in and helped out and did their job,” said Daniel. “We still have hope and it’s not overlooked.”

Nehemiah and Ja’yeir’s mother, Lakeisha Grayson, have a simple message for the driver: turn yourself in.

In New York State, it is illegal to ride an electric scooter on the sidewalk, which can result in a fine. A hit-and-run is a felony offense that carries possible jail time.

Ja’yeir’s parents said he is doing better now, though he missed the first two football games of his senior season. He was back at practice this week. The Rochester Police Department said the hit-and-run is under investigation.
