ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Here’s your guide to what’s happening around the Rochester area on Thursday. You can see more upcoming events in our community calendar.
RG&E and NYSEG customer service event
RG&E and NYSEG are holding a series of events this month for people to learn about energy bill assistance programs. That includes one happening on Thursday at 6500 West Gannett Hill Rd. in the Village of Naples. It runs from 4 to 7 p.m.
With winter being just months away, people can learn about who qualifies for monthly bill credits through the Energy Assistance Program or the Enhanced Affordability Program. Customers can also ask customer service representatives questions about their bills and learn about energy efficiency programs, such as Energy Manager. Enrollment for the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) opens on Nov. 1, and you can learn more in this story.
The next one in the series will be on Thursday, Oct. 22, at the Henrietta Town Hall on Calkins Road. It also runs from 4 to 7 p.m. RG&E and NYSEG say they will schedule more in-person events later.
Voter education event
An event on Thursday at the Edgerton R-Center aims to teach people about early voting and making a voting plan. It’s taking place in honor of National Voter Education Week, a nonpartisan movement to help people register to vote.
Throughout the week, Monroe County Board of Elections staff and volunteers have been at Rochester’s R-Centers to provide information on the democratic process, voter registration, polling site locations, reading a ballot, making an action plan to vote, and more. Here’s the schedule for the rest of the series.
- Thursday, Oct. 8, 4-6 p.m. – Edgerton R-Center, 41 Backus St.
- Topic: Make a plan to vote or vote early
- Friday, Oct. 9, 4-6 p.m. – Thomas P. Ryan R-Center, 271 Flint St., 530 Webster Ave.
- Topic: Share with your community
Town hall on Seneca Meadows landfill
A town hall on Thursday will let community members weigh in on the future of Seneca Meadows, the state’s largest landfill, which plans to expand but faces pushback from neighbors.
Environmental advocacy organization the Seneca Lake Guardian, along with New York State Assembly Members Emily Gallagher and Anna Kelles, will host the meeting at the Seneca Falls Community Center on 35 Water St. It runs from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
The Department of Environmental Conservation is currently reviewing the expansion plans. For years, News10NBC has covered the pushback against the proposed expansion of the landfill due to environmental concerns.
Organizers say Thursday’s meeting will focus on public health, air and water quality, and the impact on the regional economy if the landfill gets permission to expand by 47 acres and continue operations through at least 2050. People will have the opportunity to ask questions and share their experiences.
