ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Here’s your guide to what’s happening around the Rochester area on Thursday. You can see more upcoming events in our community calendar.
United Way Day of Caring
Thousands of volunteers representing over 185 companies across the region are set to volunteer on Thursday. The United Way of Greater Rochester and the Finger Lakes is hosting its annual Day of Caring, the region’s largest single-day volunteer event.
Volunteers will complete 415 projects for 175 nonprofit agencies across Monroe, Genesee, Livingston, Ontario, Wayne, and Wyoming counties. The event aims to bring together co-workers, neighbors, friends, and families. You can see a list of volunteer sites and learn more in this story.
Rochester Corporate Challenge
People from companies and organizations across the region will run through the streets of downtown Rochester on Thursday.
The 34th annual J.P. Morgan Chase Corporate Challenge starts and finishes outside of ESL Ballpark. It’s one of 16 Corporate Challenges worldwide. The goal of the 3.5-mile run is to help co-workers bond over exercise and post-race festivities.
The race starts at 7:15 p.m. on Plymouth Avenue outside the ballpark. The finish line is on Morrie Silver Way, next to the main entrance. You can see the course map here. Check with your employer to see if they’ve registered a team. While it’s too late to register a team for this year, you can learn about registering for next year and becoming a team captain here.
After the race, there will be festivities at the ballpark. You can see which companies have the most registered runners in this story.
Flag planting at Holy Sepulchre
Volunteers will honor veterans buried at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery on Lake Avenue by planting 6,000 American flags in the veterans’ section.
Members of the Excellus Veterans Network and Excellus BlueCross BlueShield, along with cemetery staff, will plant the flags from noon to 4 p.m. on Thursday. It comes ahead of Memorial Day, a day to honor the sacrifice of fallen U.S. military service members. The flags will remain next to graves until Flag Day on Sunday, July 14.
