GREECE, N.Y. — A Greece man has been accused of stealing nearly $500,000 after using his company’s credit card to make purchases.
Authorities say Robert Tantalo, 43, was charged on Wednesday with wire fraud and the transportation and sale of stolen goods in interstate commerce.
The criminal complaint said he was the controller for a group of companies, under a management company, overseeing accounting, auditing, financial reporting, and budgeting, as well as bank accounts, credit cards, and assets. He was responsible for giving out funds to pay expenses and payroll, authorities told us.
Additionally, authorities say he was the only person to have access to all employee personal information, including him being responsible for getting credit cards and giving them out, which gave him access to each of the company’s bank account numbers, credit card numbers, expiration dates, and security codes.
In March 2026, he resigned from the company, and authorities say the company found that he used a company credit card to make about 248 personal and unauthorized purchases between February 2025 and April 2026, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. The purchases totaled to $492,996.96.
In the purchases, authorities say it included residential property tax payments, gift cards and electronics from Target, and electronics from Amazon, which he then resold on eBay.
The attorney’s office said he would then hide these purchases by using multiple company bank accounts, making payments to the balance of the card, including adding false information into the company’s books and records.
This was investigated by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and Homeland Security Investigations.
Tantalo was at an initial court appearance and was released on conditions, according to the attorney’s office. If convicted, he could face up to 20 years in prison.
