Good Question: Why is the bridge partially shut down on Chili Ave near 390?

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A bridge replacement project on Chili Avenue near I-390 has left one lane closed, causing traffic backups during parts of the day. So, when will the project be over?

A viewer named Stephanie wrote to News10NBC asking: “When is the one lane on the bridge on Chili Ave by 390 going to open back up? … During some parts of the day, the traffic can be backed up down a good chunk of the street, needing multiple lights to pass before you actually get through it.”

News10NBC drove by the construction site and saw part of the road still blocked off, along with a sidewalk and trail. No crews were working at the time. The project is part of a bridge replacement along the Erie Canal.

The New York State Department of Transportation says crews started relocating utilities in the area, which requires a lane reduction. Once major construction begins later this year, a detour will be implemented, the DOT said. “NYSDOT will keep the community apprised of further developments,” the DOT said.

News10NBC is working to get a more specific timeline from the DOT. The initial proposed timeline says the project could last through fall 2028. Drivers can take Brooks Avenue and Genesee Park Boulevard as a detour to get around the construction.
