ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Gas prices continue to drop as the U.S. gets closer to securing a peace deal with Iran. The average price for a gallon of gas in Rochester on Thursday is $4.30. That’s down 9 cents from last week but still 40 cents higher than the national average.
News10NBC viewer Brendan asked why gas prices are dropping nationally so quickly but not in New York State. News10NBC asked AAA about this. AAA said it’s due to a number of factors like shipping and delivery rates, taxes, and environmental regulations.
In the Rochester area, drivers pay 18 cents in federal tax, about a quarter in state tax, and 8 cents in county tax. That adds up to about 50 cents per gallon altogether. But New York isn’t always more expensive than the rest of the country.
Back in March, AAA reported Rochester prices were below the national average. The region has now switched to the summer blend gasoline, which is more expensive to produce. Demand is also higher with the upcoming Fourth of July holiday. Each individual gas station can set its own prices based on supply, demand and business costs.
