Gas prices climb due to Iran conflict, but local milk, bread, and eggs see little change

Is the Iran war having an effect yet on food prices?

The day’s major News events, business reports, sports updates, Rochester area weather information and tomorrow’s forecast are presented by the News10NBC Team.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — As gas prices continue to climb due to the ongoing conflict in Iran, many are left wondering if their grocery bills will feel the impact. News10NBC visited several local grocery stores to investigate potential changes in food prices.

We checked prices at Wegmans, Tops, Aldi, Price Rite, and Walmart, focusing on the average cost of three staple items: a dozen eggs, a gallon of whole milk, and a loaf of white bread. We then compared current prices to those from January, March, and August of last year, when we previously did similar grocery price check-ins.

Patrick De Haan, chief petroleum analyst for GasBuddy, explained the broader economic impact of the situation. “Agriculture is more expensive now with rising diesel; and getting the goods to where they need to go is now more expensive because of the rise in diesel,” De Haan said.

“Transportation, logistics, agriculture, airlines are all seeing a massive surge in jet fuel, diesel, and home heating,” continued De Haan. “Oil prices are going up too. So, you know, there’s a profound trickle down that Americans are about to see. Your deliveries are about to get more expensive, and you may have to pay the cost of that. You may have the cost of rising grocery prices.”

Despite these predictions, Kowalski’s findings showed mixed results. Milk prices had slightly increased since August going from an average cost of $3.02 to $3.10; while bread costs decreased from $1.76 to $1.50. Eggs were nearly half the price compared to last year, with August’s average price being $3.05, and current average costs being at $1.76.

Here is the breakdown of each item per store:

But De Haan says it may still be too early in the war to see significant changes at the grocery store. “I don’t think we’ve seen elevated prices long enough yet to necessarily trickle into some of those supply chains, you probably will soon.”
