ROCHESTER, N.Y. — New York set a record for the most flu cases ever recorded in a single week, the state Department of Health announced Friday.

More than 71,000 cases were reported for the week ending Dec. 20, which the Department of Health says is the most ever recorded since the flu was made reportable in 2004.

Hospitalizations across the state increased by 63% during the same period. Monroe County alone recorded more than 2,300 new cases.

Officials say the best way to protect yourself is to get your flu shot, stay home when you’re sick, and wash your hands frequently.
