First Alert Weather: Yellow alert posted for Monday

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – A deep low-pressure system will be cutting across the central Great Lakes, just north of Toronto, which will bring rapid changes to our weather beginning Sunday.  The greatest potential impact will be for strong, damaging winds with wind gusts possibly exceeding 60 miles per hour on Monday.  This has the potential to produce tree damage and isolated power outages.  As a result, the News10NBC First Alert Meteorologists have issued a yellow alert for all of Monday.

In addition, before the wind arrives a steady rain will be spread into all of Western New York Sunday afternoon and evening.  The combination of snow melt and rainfall may create localized flooding for area creeks and streams.  This is a greater risk for communities west of Rochester in Genesee, Wyoming and Orleans Counties where there is now a flood watch in effect.

As the strong storm passes to our north, sharply colder temperatures will arrive for Monday night through and the New Year.  This will be some very harsh winter weather with plummeting temperatures. At times, the wind chills will be near zero with bitter cold likely into the first week of the new year.  This will also likely produce off and on lake effect snow squalls into New Years Day.

Stay tuned to News10NBC First Alert Weather for updates on the forecast.
