First Alert Weather: Yellow Alert for more unhealthy air today as wildfire smoke continues; improves by Friday morning

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Air quality is unhealthy this morning and is expected to degrade further through the A.M. as smoke continues to fill in from the northwest, before subsiding somewhat this afternoon and overnight as smoke passes to the south. We may reach “Very Unhealthy” to even “Hazardous” levels of air quality, reminiscent of the 2023 wildfires. There is some uncertainty in this so check back in frequently for updates. Air quality should become healthier tomorrow, but there’s a chance it may go back down again Saturday as a warm front pushes residual smoke back in from the south. Those with heart/lung disease, younger children, and older adults should avoid outdoor activities; all others should limit their time outdoors. Make sure to check back in frequently for updates as air quality can fluctuate strongly hour to hour.

Weather-wise, today will be quiet, with sunshine behind a layer of smoke and highs in the low 80s. The A.M. will be humid, then becoming drier for the P.M. Tonight smoke slowly subsides with lows in the low to upper 60s.

Friday air quality should go back to moderate levels. Skies will be mostly sunny and highs will be in the low 80s. Saturday a warm front may bring smoke back into the region but there is much uncertainty. Showers are likely in the morning followed by thunderstorms in the afternoon, with highs in the upper 80s and very humid air.

Sunday also features a chance of showers but will be less impactful than Saturday. It’ll be cooler with highs near 80 degrees. Stay tuned for updates!
