ROCHESTER, N.Y. – After yesterday’s Yellow Alert for strong winds, we have yet another one up for this evening and overnight… in other words, it’s March. This alert is specifically for Livingston, Ontario, and Yates County, where the winds will be strongest: Up to 50 MPH at times, which is enough to blow loose objects around and cause isolated power outages. Another concern: since these winds are going south to north, tall vehicles on the Thruway are going to be dealing with strong crosswinds. Other than the winds this evening and overnight, it will be a mostly gray day with a brief morning snow shower and highs around 50 degrees.

Winds should subside a little but during the day tomorrow, but they will definitely still be noticeable. This will bring in additional warmth; enough to bring our highs to the 60 degree mark. It will also bring in moisture, creating an unstable atmosphere and resulting in rain and thunder in the afternoon. These storms are not expected to be severe at this time. Then, late in the afternoon, a cold front blasts through, which will dropkick our temperatures all the way down to the mid 30s in the span of a few hours. Rain will turn to wet snow a little after the evening commute; only minor accumulation expected. A blast of cold air behind this front will usher in the return of lake effect snow Monday night through all Tuesday and even into Wednesday.

It is still up in the air as per the intensity and location of this lake snow. It depends on several factors including the specific wind direction and lake ice cover. But right now expectations are that this will be a minor snow event. The wind and the cold will be the more noticeable aspect. Make sure to stay tuned over the next few days as this is going to be a wild ride.
