ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Threat tracker has a Yellow Alert Friday for harsh wintry weather later this afternoon into tonight. Yellow Alert is also in place for Sunday and Monday as an areawide heavy snow is looking likely for the region.

Starting with Friday we will be tracking an arctic front that will arrive late afternoon. The front will bring a temperature drop and an increase in the wind and lake effect snow. Plan on snow covered roads and blowing snow this evening with a couple inches likely. Gusts over 30mph will drive the feel like wind chill to -10 to -20 tonight. Some lake snow will continue overnight into tomorrow morning with additional accumulations likely along Rt. 104. Saturday will start flaky and stay icy with high temps only in the single digits.

Next Yellow Alert is for Sunday and Monday as a large storm system moves across the nation and eventually up the east coast. Plenty of moisture will head our way and combined with the arctic air in place a lot of snow is possible. Snow will be on the increase Sunday midday into the afternoon and be heavy at times Sunday night into Monday morning. The storm snow will exit Monday morning, but local lake snow will continue through the day. Amounts will average 8-12 inches. Some higher totals are possible in the Southern Finger Lakes. Another area looking at higher totals, in the 12-18 inch range, will be south of Lake Ontario thanks to a boost in the snowfall off the lake. This system has the potential to bring significant impacts to travel and schools early next week. Stay tuned to News10 for updates to the snow forecast as new data continues to come in the next couple of days.
