First Alert Weather: Cloudy and cool for Wednesday, possibly first flakes on Saturday

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Yesterday felt like summer as we nearly tied the temperature record for the day… Today and tomorrow will feel like fall… Then Friday through Saturday we’re tracking a strong low pressure system which will bring rain, wind, and possibly our first snowflakes of the season, making it feel like winter at times, in some spots.

Temperatures yesterday got up to an astounding 82 degrees, just one degree short of the record. A cold front passed by overnight, which will restrict our temperatures to the upper 50s/low 60s all day. It will also be gray for pretty much the entire day, and there are a few morning showers that will pass through from around 8-10am. Tonight stays cloudy as lows reach the upper 40s.

High pressure moves in to our north tomorrow which will help to partially clear our skies in the afternoon, but northerly flow will also make it cooler with highs in the mid to upper 50s.

Friday a strengthening low pressure system will enter the region, bringing a soaking rain and possible thunder in the morning and residual rain showers in the afternoon. It will be windy, with southwest gusts up to 40 MPH. Temperatures will peak in the upper 50s but there is some wiggle room there. Either way, not a good day to be outside. Technically, the rain is beneficial since many areas south and east of Rochester have been dealing with abnormally dry conditions. We remain Green on the Threat Tracker for now, but check back in for updates if things look to become particularly nasty.

As the low pulls away to our northeast, cold Canadian air will fill in from the northwest. So cold in fact, that we may see our first snowflakes of the season… But this will be limited to a few wet flakes mixed in with the rain in the higher elevations to the south. Little to no accumulation with any snow that does make it to the surface… Besides a little on vegetation perhaps. No impacts to traffic. Some models are a little heavier on the snow, but right now the lighter scenario is more likely. Stay tuned! It will also again be windy on Saturday, this time out of the northwest with strongest gusts up to 40 MPH on the lakeshore.

High pressure moves in Saturday night which will clear our skies, calm our winds, and bring our temperatures way down. We’re likely waking up to the mid 30s Sunday morning, and if the wind calms down enough, some patchy frost is likely. Highs on Sunday will be in the upper 50s, then seasonable and sunny weather takes over Monday through Wednesday.
