ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Federal Aviation Administration has released its list of 40 major airports across the country that will see cuts in flights amid the government shutdown that’s now the longest in history.

The list doesn’t include the Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport, but it does include several airports that Rochester offers flights to. The list includes JFK and LaGuardia in New York City, along with the airports in Chicago, Los Angeles, Boston, and Philadelphia. See the full list at the bottom of this story.

The FAA says it aims to reduce air traffic by 10% across “high-volume” markets to maintain travel safety as air traffic controllers exhibit signs of strain. Rochester Airport Director Andy Moore says he expects some reductions locally. Here’s his statement to News10NBC:

“Given the FAA directive to reduce flights during the government shutdown, United Airlines announced it will make reductions on regional and domestic flights that do not travel between its hubs. This action will impact all small hub and feeder airports nationwide and not just ROC. Currently, there have been no cuts from ROC, however, we expect some reductions. Contact the FAA for any questions about the FAA directive.”

A traveler at the Rochester airport shared her thoughts on the travel troubles amid the shutdown. Doreen Bernard has a flight from Rochester to JFK on Friday. Her end destination is Montego Bay, Jamaica. She said she’s worried about her flight not taking off at all.

“I cannot afford not to go to Jamaica. It’s important to me. I’m going to bury my sister and I need to get over there. So I hope that it does not affect my flight,” Bernard said.

Experts predict hundreds, if not thousands, of flights will be canceled. Air traffic controllers have been working unpaid since the shutdown began Oct. 1. Most work mandatory overtime six days a week. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said the flight reductions aim to keep pilots and travelers safe as airspace controllers face fatigue.

Updates on local, state and national News are detailed by the News10NBC Morning Team, along with traffic, sports and the weather forecast.

“I anticipate there will be additional disruptions,” Duffy said. “There will be frustration. We are working with the airlines. They’re going to work with passengers, but in the end, our sole role is to make sure that we keep this airspace as safe as possible.”

The announcement comes as Rochester’s airport is seeing an uptick in travelers. The airport says this summer had the highest number of travelers in over 15 years. Nearly 400,000 people traveled from Rochester in June, July, and August. Rochester is considered a mid-sized regional airport, not one of the busiest in the country. The biggest airports are expected to be the most impacted.

NBC reports flight cuts will start at 4% on Friday and slowly get to 10% by next week. American Airlines posted a statement online saying many of their customers will not be impacted, but if they are, they’ll receive automatic rebooking options instead of figuring it out on their own. The airline is trying to get ahead of this as we move into the holiday season, where travel naturally spikes.

On your rights when you fly, according to the Department of Transportation, you’re entitled to a refund if your airline significantly delays or cancels your flight. It has to be a three-hour delay for domestic and 6 hours for international flights. The airline is also required to give you a refund if you have to depart from or arrive at a different airport.
