SODUS, N.Y. — Warmer temperatures are creating hazardous ice fishing conditions across the region. Just yesterday, emergency crews in Wayne County rescued a man who fell through the ice on Sodus Bay. It was the third rescue in three days.

News10NBC’s Adelisa Badzic took a trip to Lake Bluff Road in Sodus, where the ice appears solid at the edges but becomes dangerously thin further out. See below the video shared with News10NBC captures the dramatic rescue.

A 57-year-old man fell through the ice while fishing about 100 yards from the shoreline.

Ken Dobbin, a Sodus Bay resident for 15 years, witnessed the aftermath. “I didn’t know what was going on. I heard some yelling but didn’t put two and two together. There was a couple checking on their dock down here. They came running up here and I could tell they were in distress. They told me they called 911 and then I looked out over the bay, and I saw a dark shadow on the ice. They saw him go through the ice, but I saw him torso up.”

The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office said first responders communicated with the man while preparing to rescue him.

The Alton Fire Department noted this was their third call in as many days.

Dobbin expressed surprise at the speed of the rescue, which took about 30 minutes. Dobbin also shared that while he has gone ice fishing before, he won’t venture out unless there’s a foot of ice. The North Rose, Wolcott, and Sodus fire departments, along with New York State Police, assisted in the rescue.
