ROCHESTER, N.Y. — All three elevators at Tailor Square, an apartment building for low-income older adults, have been out of order since at least Friday. News10NBC’s Declan Stablow visited the building to speak with residents about the ongoing issue.
Residents expressed frustration, saying the elevator problems have persisted for months. Antoinette Latson, who cares for her father with mobility issues, said she has to walk up four flights of stairs to reach him.
“This is a hazard for him. He can’t walk. He don’t come out. He don’t do nothing. But a fire may happen. What should I do? He’s stuck,” Latson said.
Connie Houghton, a resident with a disability, also shared her concerns about emergency situations.
“I can’t walk down the stairs. There are people in wheelchairs. They’re on the fourth floor. They cannot walk at all. There are people on the second floor with scooters that can’t walk at all. So if there’s a fire, basically the only option that we have is to break a window,” Houghton said.
Tailor Square management says they are taking all necessary steps to fix the elevators and that resident safety is their top priority. The property has offered to put up residents in a hotel free of charge, but many residents do not find this solution realistic.
“I wouldn’t even accept it, because that’s even more of a stress on me and my mother,” Houghton said.
“What’s he going to do in a hotel anyway? He can’t move, he can barely move in his apartment. Like he’s got a lazy boy chair, what’s he going to do in a hotel all day, lay in bed?” Latson said.
Tailor Square opened for senior housing in March. City property records indicate the building was originally constructed in 1930 as the old Hickey Freeman manufacturing building. However, due to renovations after 1991, it must comply with ADA regulations.
