ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Dr. William Valenti, a prominent figure in Rochester’s medical community, received the New York State Liberty Medal and the key to the city. The honors were presented at Trillium Health’s World AIDS Day celebration at the Hyatt Regency Rochester.

Dr. Valenti was recognized for his decades of work researching and combating the HIV and AIDS epidemic.

“I think we’re in good hands with young talented people who know what they’re doing and are up to doing the job,” said Valenti.

“Separate the culture issues from the science and get the job done, because this virus, the AIDS virus, can be stopped,” he added.

Dr. Valenti announced his retirement in October. He shared plans to embark on a train journey across the country with his partner.
