ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Three local ninth graders are being honored for helping to rescue a girl from the freezing waters of Lake Ontario during February break.
Brothers Josiah and Matthew Kelly, who are homeschooled, and their friend Jeremiah Currier, a Brockport student, were at Hamlin Beach State Park when they spotted a nine-year-old girl alone on the ice.
They kept an eye out for her, and when she fell into the freezing water, the three boys rushed to pull the girl out and brought her safely to shore. News10NBC spoke with the students about how they stayed calm during such a scary moment.
“I didn’t want her to fall in,” said Josiah Kelly.
“It was just like an act. It wasn’t thinking, just do,” said Jeremiah Currier.
“It def changes you. Everyone can play a role,” said Matthew Kelly.
Any student in grades K-12 in a Monroe County school is eligible for a nomination. The good deed must have occurred within one year of the nomination. Anyone over 18 years of age can submit a nomination form, including family, friends, school staff, and coaches.
The Rochester Police Department has held the Do the Right Thing awards since 1995. You can learn more about nominating a student here. See past winners here.
