GREECE, N.Y. — Residents in Greece are expressing frustration after the Board of Zoning Appeals approved a new Delta Sonic gas station near their homes. The proposed site, located at the Wegmans Plaza on Latta Road, would include at least 8 pumps, vacuums, and a car wash.
Christine Rice, a nearby homeowner of two years, voiced her concerns about the impact on property values and student safety. “I border it. So I do have a direct stake in this. One of most prominent realtors has said that it would destroy our property values,” Rice said.
Rice, who works as a teacher, also raised concerns about the traffic in the area, and the impact it may have on students. “Between Long Pond [Road] and Latta [Road] is already super congested,” she said. “Where I live in that neighborhood, you cannot make a left hand turn already on Long Pond. You have about 2000 students in that area between Greece-Athena Middle and High School, the Greece Assembly of God School, and the Montessori school. They are the ones who will be most heavily impacted by this.”
Delta Sonic stated in a previous meeting it would implement noise reduction measures such as trees and a fence, and conducted a traffic survey, which found no issues from the either the Monroe County Department of Transportation, or the NY State Department of Transportation.
Gina DiBella, another concerned neighbor, criticized the zoning approval process, noting the developer’s requests for changes to zoning regulations. “They’re requiring 80,000 gallons of gasoline tanks when only 20,000 gallons are permitted,” DiBella said. “Why have even zoning regulations if a developer can come along and change it to get their way?”
News10NBC reached out to Delta Sonic for comment but has not yet received a response.
The Board of Zoning Appeals’ approval comes with conditions, although details are still being determined.
The Planning Board is set to vote on the site plan tomorrow night.
