ROCHESTER, N.Y. — With three-foot snow banks and negative wind chills, many are considering a getaway. According to Skyscanner, the world’s biggest booking site, traveling on a budget is possible if you remain flexible.
“Skyscanner data shows that Wednesdays are the best days to actually travel,” said Lourdes Losada, Director of America’s for Skyscanner.
If you have school-aged kids, you’ll likely have less flexibility regarding when you travel, but where you travel is another matter.
“On the top of the list of domestic – Las Vegas, or on the warmer side, Miami or Orlando. Those will be the ones that will give you the best value for your money,” she said.
These locations provide the best bang for your buck due to the high number of available flights, which drives down prices. Direct flights from Rochester to Orlando and Las Vegas are available.
For international travel, affordable options include San Salvador, Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic, Cancun in Mexico, and Milan in Italy.
She said the key is to keep an open mind.
“If you don’t care where to go, we have one that is called drops,” Losada said. “Every week we publish things that have dropped 20 percent or more from the previous week,” she added.
Travelers can set up price drop alerts on platforms like Kayak, Google Flights, Hopper, and Going. Skyscanner also offers a new tool called the Cheapest Destination Planner.
“It’s called the cheapest destination planner. It’s an interactive tool,” she said.
Users can select a month on the calendar to find the cheapest domestic and international fares available during that time.
