ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Barakah Muslim Charity hosted a turkey giveaway Saturday.
The charity was founded in 2013 in Rochester, providing food and clothing assistance, inmate support, counseling, and medical screening to those in need.
Alma, the operations and finance director of the charity, said their goal for Saturday was to give turkeys away to about 600 people/families.
“For the past few months, obviously we have had issues with the SNAP program, so the needs have grown,” said Alma.
When News10NBC stopped by the event Saturday morning a little while after it first started, they had given out turkeys to about 200 families.
“Something like this is a major stress relief for families going into the holiday season,” said Alma.
The charity, located on Jefferson Avenue in Rochester, also has a food pantry open on Thursdays from 5 – 7 p.m. as well as Sundays from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Also on Sundays from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. the charity hosts a community kitchen, where they serve a hot meal.
