Medina’s historic Culvert Road tunnel under the Erie Canal remains closed after storm flooding

MEDINA, N.Y. — The historic Culvert Road tunnel under the Erie Canal in Medina has been shut down with no timeline for reopening.

Orleans County and the state’s Canal Corporation teamed up on the project after a major storm flooded the area last month, forcing the closure. Neighbors said the closure has hurt their businesses and the flooding has affected their homes.

“The whole road is brown with water because obviously it’s from the fields and then it floods down into that area covering all of it and it’s really really high,” said Marcia Toussaint.

The tunnel is the fastest way for people living on the north side to drive into town. The closure has left many residents looking for alternate routes.

News10NBC will continue to monitor the situation as officials work on the project.
