Perinton proposal: Six-month pause on large housing developments in Egypt, Bushnell’s Basin and Erie Canal Conservation Overlay

PERINTON, N.Y. — Perinton leaders are considering a six-month pause on large housing developments in parts of the town.

The proposed moratorium would affect any housing projects with more than five separate dwellings in the hamlets of Egypt and Bushnell’s Basin, and the Erie Canal Conservation Overlay, due to a recent surge in these types of projects.

“Those are all areas where we’re seeing a lot of development. And what we want to do is focus on the planning that we’re doing,” Town Supervisor Jenn Townsend said.

Townsend said the pause would give both the town and developers time to plan.

“It’s fair to developers coming in and fair to the residents who live there to make sure that we’re very clear about what it is we’re looking for. So a moratorium makes sense because having a very brief pause there, six month moratorium, just while we finish our planning, we think is a smart way to, approach the issue,” Townsend said.

One project that could be affected is the proposed redevelopment of the Burgundy Basin Inn into about 200 apartments and townhomes. Some neighbors have opposed the project, citing traffic and safety concerns, and are calling for a longer pause.

“I advocate that you take one year on this moratorium because you tell me if you’re going to go through this 22 pages and come up with a plan in less than a year,” Elmer Dustman said, who lives near the proposed development.

News10NBC reached out to the Burgundy Basin Inn owners but did not hear back. The next public hearing on the proposed moratorium is scheduled for Nov. 2, the day before Election Day.
