ONTARIO COUNTY, N.Y. — The Ontario County Sheriff’s Office reported that a Naples man has died and a Cohocton woman is in critical condition after a three-car crash on County Road 12 in Naples at around 3:40 p.m. on Wednesday.
Deputies went to the reported rollover crash involving at least one car on fire and multiple people trapped.
Deputies say the crash involved a Nissan Pathfinder, a Chevy pickup truck towing a camper, and a GMC Terrain.
Deputies say the driver of the Nissan, a 40-year-old Cohocton woman, was going north on County Road 12 while having two children with her, a six-year-old and an eight-month-old. Additionally, the driver of the Chevy pickup (towing a camper), a 71-year-old Naples man, was going south on County Road 12 with his wife and two dogs. The third car, the GMC Terrain, was driven by a 34-year-old Fairport man who was heading south on County Road 12, driving behind the camper, deputies say.
Deputies reported that the crashes started when the Nissan unexpectedly swerved into the oncoming lane, crashing into the Chevy pickup head-on. This led to the GMC Terrain, which was behind the Chevy pickup’s camper, crashing into the camper.
The crashes led to the Nissan rolling over after being pushed back, deputies added.
The driver of the GMC Terrain received minor injuries, and the sheriff’s office says he left his SUV to help the driver of the rolled-over Nissan and two kids, pulling them from the fire. The driver of the Nissan was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital by Mercy Flight and is reported to be in critical condition. Both kids received minor injuries, according to the sheriff’s office.
The driver of the pickup truck, 71-year-old Brian P. Johnson, died, along with two dogs, OCSO reported. The truck was also on fire, and the female passenger in the Chevy pickup was pulled from the crash by another bystander. She was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital for leg fractures, but is expected to make a full recovery, according to deputies.
OCSO says the roadway has been closed for hours, but will reopen soon.
Naples and Bristol fire departments, along with Naples and Canandaigua EMS, also responded to the scene.
The crash is under investigation by OCSO’s Criminal Investigative Division.
