ROCHESTER, N.Y. — With the arrival of spring comes the return of construction projects. Several upcoming road and bridge projects in the Rochester area are expected to impact traffic. Here’s your guide to some of them.
I-590 in Brighton
The State Department of Transportation’s $51.5 million project to repair or replace bridges on I-590 in Brighton begins on Monday, March 30.
The highway will be reduced to one lane in each direction starting Saturday morning so crews can set up the work zone, the DOT says. Signs have been posted to remind people. News10NBC’s Erin Mahon will be live in Brighton on News10NBC’s Friday newscasts starting at 4 p.m. Watch the show live here.
I-590 will be reduced to two lanes in each direction during the construction. In addition, both the 590 South exit entrance ramp from Monroe Avenue and the 590 South exit ramp to Monroe Avenue will be closed. Drivers can expect lane reductions and ramp closures through the fall of 2028. Monroe Avenue and Allens Creek Road will remain open to walkers and bikers throughout the project.
The project will specifically replace bridges over Monroe Avenue and fix spans over Allens Creek Road. It will also provide access to the Rochester airport and the State Thruway.
The DOT also plans to add new drainage systems, increase shoulder widths, replace signs, add new lighting, repave the roadway, and more. The project aims to reduce maintenance costs and increase durability during bad weather. The current bridges were built in the mid-1960s, with the future bridges expected to have service lives of 75 years.

Rochester’s Bull’s Head neighborhood
A project to improve Kensington Street and Silver Street in Rochester’s Bull’s Head neighborhood will begin on Monday, March 30.
Crews will realign the streets in a new configuration, aiming to better serve drivers, walkers, and support plans to redevelop the Bull’s Head area. Construction is expected to be completed by the summer.
Kensington Street will be closed between Silver and Brown streets. Silver Street will be closed between York and Taylor streets. If you frequently drive through that area, you should find another route. You can learn more about the project here.
I-490 in Perinton
I-490 in Perinton will have some lane reductions for some bridge work. I-490 will be reduced to one lane, between the Pittsford-Palmyra and Bushnell’s Basin exits, starting on Monday, March 30.
The work is expected to last through Wednesday, April 8. The eastbound lane will close from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily, and the westbound lane will be closed the entire time. In addition, the I-490 westbound on-ramp to Exit 27 to Bushnell’s Basin will close starting Monday for the rest of the construction season.
The work is part of the NYS Department of Transportation’s $60.8 million project to replace bridges carrying I-490 over the Erie Canal and Kreag Road. Drivers should find a different route.
