Good Question: Are water main breaks impacting drinking water in Monroe County?

Updates on local, state and national News are detailed by the News10NBC Morning Team, along with traffic, sports and the weather forecast.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — With more than a dozen water main breaks across the Rochester area this winter, people have asked News10NBC if the water main breaks affect drinking water quality.

A viewer named Kathy asked, “Is the Monroe County Water Authority using more chlorine in our drinking water due to the recent water main breaks around the area? I can smell it whenever I fill a glass from the tap.”

News10NBC brought Kathy’s question to the Monroe County Water Authority. A representative says they do not increase chlorine levels due to water main breaks. However, there is a reason for the smell Kathy noticed.

The Water Authority explained, “Seasonal changes in water temperature can influence chlorine concentrations in the distribution system.” In colder temperatures, chlorine depletes more slowly in drinking water, resulting in slightly higher concentrations during winter compared to summer.

The Monroe County Water Authority monitors chlorine levels daily and assures that they remain within a typical range for this time of year. If you have concerns about your tap water, you can call MCWA Customer Service at (585) 442-7200.
