HOLLEY, N.Y. — Residents at Ackley Manor in Orleans County say they’ve been without heat for several days amid a brutal cold snap. News10NBC spoke with tenants about their struggles and how they plan to cope.

“I’ve been out of heat since last Thursday. I think it’s the 22nd, if I’m not mistaken,” Wilfredo Torres said. Torres, who has lived at Ackley Manor for six years, explained how the cold has affected his health. “My bones. I have arthritis. And I got a spinal stenosis. I had two heart attacks and with the cold, it’s just hurting my bones,” Torres said.

Torres says Ackley Manor provided him with two space heaters while repairs are awaited. Other residents say they’ve also been impacted by the outages.

Alyssa Preston, a mother, described the challenges her family faced. “I mean, the kids are coughing right now and we went two days without heat. It took a sheriff to show up for them to actually come and turn it on at 10:00 at night,” Preston said. She added that it has been difficult managing daily tasks without hot water and heat.

Nichole Lalik, another resident, shared her concerns about the situation. “I’ve been lucky to still retain my heat, but it’s a lot of anxiety because our water, like, you’ll turn it on and you’ll have constant bubbles in it,” Lalik said.

“I had 4 or 5 layers of clothes on,” said 75-year-old Alison Shaw, who’s lived there for 14 years. “I had 3 or 4 coat, and hoods and sweaters and everything else.”

“This is ridiculous,” said Colleen Nicholson, a resident of four years. “I pay my rent all, my bills are paid. I have an immaculate apartment, I don’t have any other issues.”

News10NBC reached out to the Rochester Urban League, which residents say operates Ackley Manor, but has not yet received a response.
