ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Watch out for dangerously cold wind chills on Friday that could make it feel like -25 degrees in some places. The actual temperatures on Friday aren’t expected to get above 8 degrees. Here’s what to know to stay safe:
Possible record-tying cold streak
The Rochester region hasn’t gotten above 20 degrees for a week. If that continues for four more days, we could tie the record. In our 10-day forecast, we’re expecting temperatures in the teens at least until Tuesday and some more chilly temperatures after that. See our latest forecast here.
First Alert Meteorologist Mate Morris tried an experiment in News10NBC’s parking lot. He threw up boiling water into the air and it turned into mist. Watch News10NBC TODAY now through 7 a.m. to stay prepared. Livestream the show here.
How quickly can frostbite happen?
With a -15 degree wind chill, you could get frostbite in just half an hour. With a -25 degree wind chill, it could take just 15 to 20 minutes. However, if the wind is gusty instead of steady and you’re sweating, it could take even less time to get frostbite. Make sure not to leave any skin exposed if you’re heading outside. Wear multiple layers, hats, gloves, and a scarf.
